Before the 2026 division, Muradnagar covered 340.73 square kilometres between 23°30′–23°48′ north and 90°52′–91°04′ east.
The former boundary met Nabinagar and Kasba to the north; Kasba, Debidwar, and Brahmanpara to the east; Chandina to the south; and Bancharampur, Homna, Daudkandi, and Titas to the west. Separate legal area and boundary measurements for the two new administrative units have not yet been published.
The former upazila had 22 unions and 198 general wards. The July 2026 gazette transferred ten unions to Bangra, leaving twelve in Muradnagar. A separately gazetted post-split ward total was not found.
No current Muradnagar municipality could be verified. BBS records and the main upazila portal do not name a municipality; an older health page’s unsupported claim of one municipality is therefore not used here.

The 2022 census counted 582,950 people in 131,575 households within the former 22-union Muradnagar boundary. Literacy among people aged seven and above was 72.36%—73.20% for males and 71.65% for females.
Using the former area gives a calculated density of about 1,711 people per square kilometre. The calculation is not a published post-split density. Separate Bangra and present-day Muradnagar totals are not yet available from BBS.

The locality was formerly known as Tholla. A police station was established in 1858, it was renamed Muradnagar in 1878 in association with revenue collector Mir Murad Ali, and it became an upazila in 1983.
Banglapedia places the area within Balda Khal Pargana during Mughal rule and records local participation in peasant and anti-British movements. It also documents Liberation War encounters at Pantibazar and Chapitala.

Notable institutions include Muradnagar D.R. Government High School, Jahapur K.K. Academy and College, Sreekail Government College, Muradnagar Government Technical School and College, Bangra High School, and Ramchandrapur High School.
A January 2026 primary-education profile listed 204 government primary schools, while a 2021 secondary profile listed one government school, 52 nongovernment schools, 11 colleges, one government technical school and college, and 35 madrasas. These are pre-split totals and are not presented as current counts for either new upazila.

Agriculture remains a major programme focus. Documented crops include Aus, Aman and Boro rice, jute, maize, mustard and other oilseeds, lentils, chilli, ginger, turmeric, and vegetables.
The Agricultural Marketing Department lists Muradnagar Bazar and Ramchandrapur Bazar. Older official planning documents also identify Companiganj, Sreekail, and Dhanirampur as important commercial centres.
Bakhrabad Gas Field, now geographically associated with the Bangra side of the divided area, was discovered in 1969 and began commercial production in 1984.

From Dhaka, the official directions follow the Dhaka–Chattogram highway to Mainamati, then the Cumilla–Brahmanbaria/Sylhet road north to Companiganj, followed by roughly four kilometres west to Muradnagar Upazila Parishad.
From Cumilla, travellers use the same Mainamati–Companiganj approach. The former upazila centre is listed as 35.42 kilometres by road from Cumilla district headquarters. There is no direct railway connection to the Upazila Parishad; the Gumti has historically supported limited goods transport.

Muradnagar Upazila Health Complex is a government facility with 50 approved beds. Its registered services include emergency, inpatient and outpatient care, pathology, pharmacy, an operating theatre, and ambulance service.
Union health centres, sub-health centres, family-welfare centres, and community clinics serve the wider area. The registry has not yet republished a complete post-split allocation of those facilities between Bangra and Muradnagar.

Kaminikumar Datta, a lawyer and politician, came from Sreekail. Captain Narendra Nath Datta, also born in Sreekail, was a physician, philanthropist, and founder of Sreekail College.
Romizuddin Ahmed, a footballer and former legislator, was born in Babutipara; this entry will retain its secondary-source attribution. Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan is from Akubpur and is identified through a 2024 BSS report; any public-office description is stated with its date.
